Make Way for the Queen

Make Way for the Queen

Really? Caroline Kennedy might be named as Hillary Clinton’s replacement by New York Governor David Paterson. Really?? This is a woman whose interviews have been peppered with “ums” and “you knows”. But no one in the media seems to be bringing these points to any significant light like they did with George Bush’s mispronunciation of nuclear and Sarah Palin’s incessant garbling of the English language. Caroline gets a pass because she is a Kennedy. This is where Democrats become- like their Republican co-conspirators –hypocrites. Is not Andrew Cuomo, also from a notable political family, more qualified? He has been elected to office at least and seems to have served with some distinction. I am not someone who is big on the necessity of experience- in fact I detest the experience card as it too often trumps its hand mates laziness and cronyism. But even Sarah Palin had some modicum of experience no matter how loathsome her social views might be or her minimal grasp of foreign policy.

Will Caroline Kennedy do fine in Washington and well as a Senator? Sure. It’s not rocket science; it’s been decades since public service attracted the best and brightest. The romance of a diplomatic post or the nobility of public service have long been replaced at the head of the line by the more lucrative jobs available to those in the private sector like investment banking. But perhaps the silver lining in the cloud of the economic crisis is the realization that the big money is gone- fueled by speculation and credit that has dried up or the leveraged buyout will be a less unleashed beast at the very least. Maybe that is why the incoming Obama administration has received 300,000 resumes. Is it the return of government service to respectability in the public consciousness? Maybe, but this sort of political nepotism does nothing for anyone and a special election should be held- this is New York not Illinois. Would that require a change in the law? Yes, but so little attention is paid to laws nowadays that changing one to benefit the people and democracy would amount to a revolution. Change we can believe in.
